Just have to report, Mesilla Valley Fly Fishers club out of Las Cruces puts on this project and it is Awsome. On Wedensday we took about 30 Wounded Servicemen to the Penasco and gave them a guided day of fishing. For the most part it was one on one so the volunteer turnout was awsome. The ladies cooked a meal fit for a king: brisket, lamb, ham, and sides, deserts, and fixens that would put a church pot luck to shame.
The wind picked up and we spend alot of time fixing wind knots but overall the guys (and gals) did great, the two with me both caught trout, and missed a few. The Rio Grande Chubs were out in force and I think everyone at least caught a few of them. The trout were feeding on anything you threw as long as it was a copper john.;)
Its not much but it feels good to give back a little to our military.

NAVAJO RESERVOIR
2012 SPRING PEAK RELEASE FINAL SCHEDULE
May 14, 2012

SENT VIA FAX AND E-MAIL

The Bureau of Reclamation has finalized this year's scheduled spring peak release from Navajo Reservoir. The attached chart shows the end of day release rates throughout the spring peak release period. Reclamation will begin to increase the release on Monday, May 21, 2011 at 1:00 AM, reaching 5,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) on Wednesday, May 23rd at approximately 3:00 PM. The release will stay at 5,000 cfs for seven days. On Wednesday, May 30th at approximately 7:00 AM, the release will begin to decrease, reaching 500 cfs on Friday, June 1st at approximately 11:00 PM, where it will remain until further notice.

The release pattern, duration, and magnitude for the spring peak release follow the San Juan River Basin Recovery Implementation Program (SJRIP) Flow Recommendations for Endangered Fish.

Adjustments may be made to the release if significant precipitation occurs during the scheduled release period.

BUREAU OF RECLAMATION
NAVAJO RESERVOIR
REVISED 2012 SPRING PEAK RELEASE
SCHEDULE

May 8, 2012

SENT VIA FAX AND E-MAIL

BUREAU OF RECLAMATION
NAVAJO RESERVOIR
REVISED 2012 SPRING PEAK RELEASE
SCHEDULE

May 8, 2012

SENT VIA FAX AND E-MAIL

As a result of cooler temperatures observed and forecasted for this week, the Bureau of Reclamation has postponed the beginning of the Navajo Reservoir spring peak release until at least May 21st. This decision was made with assistance of the Colorado Basin River Forecast Center (CBRFC), which has indicated there would be a 75% probability the Animas River peak would occur after May 18th, which was the date of the center of the previously announced release hydrograph. The goal of the Navajo spring peak release is to match the timing of the peak of the Animas River in Farmington.

A 7-day peak release of 5,000 cubic feet per second (cfs), with a ramp up and down over 3 days will be scheduled. At the end of the peak release period, the release is scheduled to return to 500 cfs.

Reclamation is still finalizing the operating plan and will send out the daily release schedule chart as soon as the plan is finalized. We continue to work closely with the CBRFC, and will provide updates as needed. If the forecast remains unchanged next week, the spring peak release will be finalized next Monday, May 14th. The release should remain at 500 cfs until the start of the ramp up.

If you have any questions, please contact Ryan Christianson at (970) 385-6590 or e-mail him at rchristianson@usbr.gov.

Anyone have any info on fishing the peak flow in the past. I have a trip planned for Memorial day weekend. I really don't want to cancel. I can deal with 5k cfs in my boat but I've always avoided fishing at that flow. This time I'm kind of committed since my wife is having a book club thing at our home and she's asked me to vacate for the weekend. dang, figured I'd just have to go fishing. And we have reservations at Cottonwood.

This being my second post in 2 years means that I like to stay in the background. This forum has be a great source of information and entertainment.
I fished the CR area on Sunday and had a good morning and decided to go and check out the Kiddy Pool around 2 o'clock. I walked up and started fishing top water next to a guide and his client. All good no problem. The after a while another guide comes from up stream and positions hie clients across from myself and the other guides client. All good no problem. The older fella across from me. is on the opposite side of a large rock. And seems to be catching fish but after 15 minuites he wants to fish on my side of this rock. Their guide had already asked another person to move away from this fella because he was getting to close, so he obviously understood the the meaning of invading someone elses space. I began to try to fish and ignore it but he wanted to fish the same line as me across this large rock. I live around here and fish this river no less than 50 to 100 time a year and have not seen such disregard and disrespect from another fisherman and especially another guide. When I guided clients I tried to impart proper ettiquete to others this is supposed to be fun not a competition. If I am wrong feel welcome to say so. Sorry for the this windy thread

Well the value of my flies just went up again. I ordered a UV flashlight some goo, a new bobbin threader, assorted hooks size 14 to 24, and some tinsel.

If I have 100 usable flies in my fly boxes and I divide that by what I have spent on tying equipment and supplies that makes my flies worth abut $6.00 apiece.

And the fly shops want me to use those cheap $1.00 to $2.00 flies.
The only time I stoop to buying shop fly's is when I want something that will catch fish. Seems every time I get on the river the fly that is everyone's choice is one that I have not tied yet. So I buy a few, lose a few, and take a few home to try to tie something close for the next time (when the fly of the day will have changed).

:D:D:D:cool:

Merc

I have attached a copy of Ryan Christianson’s complete presentation for your review but please find listed below the information we were all waiting for…. and that would be the dates of the 2012 Spring Release on the San Juan River. It was pretty much cut in stone that there would be a release of 7 days at 5000cfs. These were the dates that were given to us with the caveat that the actual start date could change based on weather conditions between now and May 14, 2012. If that were to happen we would receive a weeks’ notice of this change. It was also stated that if there was not a change as of May 7, 2012, then the May 14th would be a definite start date. I know it is a little confusing but we all feel very confident that High water will start on Monday, May 14, 2012. Should you have any questions please contact Ryan at the BOR, 970-385-6590 or e-mail rchristianson@usbr.gov

I have a fly tying question that I've been wondering about for a while. I usually use pictures of flies on the internet to base my patterns on and I've noticed that some larvae patterns use the 3x long semi-dropped point hooks and some use the shorter midge pupa hooks. There's a big difference in length between the two, so I imagine that the fish would differentiate, but I've definitely caught fish on both. So do you think the SJR midge larvae actually vary in size that much or are the fish eating the shorter larvae patterns thinking that they are midge pupa and the patterns are mislabeled? This has been bugging me for a long time. hehe

I would like your post under the Hyde thread discussing boats. First, please refrain from hijacking posts. If you have something off topic you would like to discuss, start a new thread. It's very easy to do. Second, Bubba has never has claimed to invent the foam hopper. For you to say that he has is completely out of line. Unless you have evidence to support accusations, keep the slander to yourself. The foam hopper I believe you bring up, the Chernobyl ant, was not invented in Montana. A guide on the Green River in Utah named Emmett Heath is responsible for that pattern.
