Steamers on the Juan

I am headed up thursday and was wanting to know if u guys could give me some pointers on fishing streamers up there? Like what patterns, techniques and the like. I figure Boogers and Bunny leeches would do fine but wanted to pick your brains about it. Thanks guys.

I would love some advice as well. Also, has anyone really done any type of fishing past sunset? Location and advice? A few of the guys I am heading up there mentioned they wanted to try this but was a little skeptical. I have a hard time getting around some in the day, last thing I want to do is get into trouble on the river at night. How do you fly after sunset? Around dark? Fly patterns?

All I can say is this is one of the best 4 days of the year for me. Catching fish or not, I love visiting the SJ! :)

I don't streamer fish alot on the juan, so keep that in mind. The only time I have though is at the Texas Hole at sun up. I would cast into the current letting it take my streamer down stream and than strip strip strip. Alot of weight to get it down and most of the time I'll pick up 2 or 3 with in a say 30 minute time frame. Some of the biggest fish I've caught were on streamers out of the texas hole. here's what I have been using.

Seems to work well. I did learn the hard way that stripping a big stream with 5x leads to instant break offs me me anyways. Last time I was streamer fishing at the t-hole I had three break offs in a row due to that(hard hits). I switch to a 3x leader witch helped a bunch with my break offs (inexperience).

Re: Steamers on the Juan

Streamers and boogers work on the Juan above THole and below. With the clear water, dawn and dusk are obviously going to be productive. In the winter when the lake turns over and the water is off color, they can be productive all day long.

White, olive, black and brown BH and cone boogers work well. On the strip, big upstream mends and on the sink when the bug hits the water will produce strikes. Be ready with 4X or heavier as some of these takes will be just that and you will have no fish or fly.

Have fun with it and hope this helps. Think out of the box up there. It is not all about 22's all the time.

As usual, good advice Merc, you're the man. I used to try and think out of the box up there but almost always ended up with me putting up a goose egg. So i've made myself cocncentrate only on the itty bitty. But i'm gonna give it a shot thursday. Will report back on the results or lack there of.

Looks like fun to tie flie Mr.Icatchfish, I'll give it a try. Since i started out tying bass flies I love anything big with eyes. Thanks buddy

Give em hell with the meat up there in the C&R and upper flats with the streamers. It is fun to not look at an indicator for a part of the day if the fish are not looking up for dries. I think you will get some tugs and you will feel fish popping that bug quite a bit even if they do not commit.

Thats what I was thinking. Love to feel the hits since i grew up bass fishing. Think I'll try the 3X cause i do get a little to aggresive with the set. I would think Cable hole might bring a strike or two. But we could sit here and guess about it all day. Isn't that what drifli calls Phishing? Like I say i will let ya'll know how it goes.
