Flows Down to 650 Today...Bummer !

As a result of recent storms and forecasts calling for continued precipitation in the San Juan River Basin, the Bureau of Reclamation will be decreasing the release from Navajo Reservoir to 650 cubic feet per second (cfs) today, July 26, 2010, at 11:00 am. Releases are made for the authorized purposes of the Navajo Unit, and to attempt to maintain a target base flow through the endangered fish critical habitat reach of the San Juan River (Farmington to Lake Powell).

Wow, that stinks. The fish barely have time to get used to the new flow and they change it again. Wonder if going up this week would even be worth it, on second thought, its always worth going. Anyone down to take odds on when the next change will be? I'm betting friday.

We need to pray for hot dry weather. That will be the next chance of a bump up in the flows. As long as there is rain in the forecast, they will bring em down.

I am heading down Thursday. If the flows stay this way do you all have any advice on fishing? Me and a few others are doing our annual fishing trip for 3 days and I do not want to be shut out!

Well you will not be shut out. The guides railed fish yesterday and the fish started to pod up with the lower flows. The reduced flows lower their cover and the fish cannot spread out as much as they could before. You should be fine as fishing is usually better for this reason on the way down as opposed to the way up.
