Fly Patterns
San Juan River Fly Patters

The fly patterns listed here have proven to be successful on the San Juan time and again. However, this is not a complete list of flies that will work on this river. Many fly patterns come and go so donít be afraid to experiment and try your own. Many of the hot San Juan flies were discovered over time by trial and error. New fly patterns will often work because the trout are unaccustomed to the new look.

Generally, the fly patterns are smallÖ Mayflies18 to 22 and Midges 22 to 28. San Juan flies are tied in various colors including olive, red, chocolate and cream. "Matching the Hatch" is very important.

Many San Juan River guides have developed their own private patterns that are very effective. A quality guide is very adept in adjusting various fly patterns as the troutís feeding behavior changes. Sometimes, the guides will share these patterns andÖ well, sometimes they will not.
